Pillar 1: Productive and freely chosen work
The best way of promoting employment is through sustainable economic development. This means creating an economic environment and policies in which people can develop the work skills they need, and enterprises, public or private, are economically viable and socially and environmentally sustainable, so that growth generates greater employment opportunities for all.
Growth alone is not enough! International trade and economic growth alone can eradicate poverty, but only if pay and conditions permit workers to work their way out of poverty. Decent work benefits workers in globalised supply chains, and by stimulating local economies and promoting respect for the rights of workers in domestic labour markets, is the most powerful of tools for poverty reduction.
